A quick stop by an old pohutukawa.
A driveway up and down (best approached travelling west, and a little rough on the west side). This spot is memorable to us because a car following us once as we were travelling east veered off the road when the driver fell asleep. Murray saw it in his mirror, cross the road and, most conveniently, go up the track, coming to rest with a jolt in the long grass in the fence. Fortunately none in the carload of East Coast sportspeople was hurt..just shook up.
It's probably part of the old road and is now really just a driveway with a big old tree on it.
Our national Christmas tree, the pohutukawa, can reach grand old ages. This one is but a baby compared to the oldest living one in NZ, at East Cape in the Te Araroa School grounds, which is 600 years old!
And have you seen the one believed to be 400 years old at Mt Maunganui? There is a cache there named “Living in the past” and it's well worth seeing.
There is no pen in this cache yet.
