This cache is located very near the abutments for the original "Lost Bridge", which was replaced several years ago by the current bridge. Plenty of parking and muggles should not be a problem.
And now for the Legend of Lost Bridge. The first time I crossed the old "Lost Bridge", I was heading to Fontana Lake with an an old timer to try my luck at bass fishing. He mentioned that we would go by way of "Lost Bridge" and Needmore Road. I wondered out loud about how the bridge came to be known as "Lost Bridge" and the old timer related the following story.
A century or so ago, the county contracted to have a bridge built across the Little Tennessee River to connect the state road, which is now Hwy. 28, with the communities of Burningtown and Tellico. Partial payments were made as construction on the bridge progressed. Upon completion, the construction company appeared before the county commissioner meeting to request payment of the final sum due on the contract. The board felt that payment should be withheld until they could satisfy themselves that the structure had in fact been completed and the quality of work was satisfactory. Two members of the board were appointed to travel out to the bridge the next day to conduct a formal inspection and report back to the entire board. They set out on their assignment the next afternoon via horse and buggy. It so happened that a couple of jugs of a local corn product were in the buggy to help make the dusty 15 mile trip a bit more tolerable. Well, by the time they got to the general vicinity of the bridge, they had forgotten why they were even there. A little embarassed the next day, they reported back to the board that "the bridge must be lost as they had looked for it without any success". And to this day the new bridge at this location still bears the name "Lost Bridge"!
