The poem mainly centers on the Greek hero Odysseus (or Ulysses, as he was known in Roman myths) and his journey home after the fall of Troy. It takes Odysseus ten years to reach his home land of Ithaca after the ten-year Trojan War. In his absence, it is assumed he has died, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must deal with a group of unruly suitors, who compete for Penelope's hand in marriage.

After their encounter with the Sirens. They then passed between the six-headed monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis, Odysseus losing six men to Scylla, and landed on the island of Thrinacia. There, Odysseus’ men ignored the warnings of Tiresias and Circe after Zeus caused a storm which prevented them leaving, and hunted down the sacred cattle of the sun god Helios as their food runs short while Odysseus had left to pray. This sacrilege was punished by a shipwreck as they were driven towards Charybdis; after the Sun God threatened to Zeus to drive into the Underworld unless the men were punished; in which all but Odysseus drowned when he hung onto a fig tree above Charybdis. He was washed ashore on the island of Ogygia. The island is the home of Calypso.Where she compels him to remain as her lover for seven years.
Odysseus cannot be away from his wife Penelope any longer and wants to go to Calypso to tell her. His patron goddess Athena asks Zeus to order the release of Odysseus from the island, and Zeus sends the messenger Hermes, to tell Calypso to set Odysseus free, for it was not his destiny to live with her forever. She angrily comments on how the gods hate goddesses having relationships with mortals for this. Then being worried for her not-meant-to-be love Odysseus, Calypso sends him on his way with a boat, wine, and bread. Odysseus tells her he knows she is more beautiful than his wife, but he wants to get home for other reasons.
