Quernmore - Rowton Brook Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is a film cannister container. You will need your own pen/pencil to sign the log book.
This cache is part of a 5 mile circular walk around the village of Quernmore. Please note the terrain rating, some areas are particularly steep, but with that comes wonderful views!
Rowton Brook in the 18th century was the hub of a local hat making industry in the village. Billycock hats and sea caps were made here for export, mainly for wear by slaves and convicts. In the 18th century the area was also notorious as being a repository for contraband brandy brought in from Glasson Dock. The remoteness of the area, along with its proximity to the lonely road leading through the Trough of Bowland into Yorkshire, made it an ideal location for these illicit activities. Interestingly Rowton Brook disappears here, underground.
Also note there are several gates in the field which indicate the route of the Thirlmere Aqueduct. For more information on the different kinds of gates used to mark the aqueduct route, click (visit link)
In between this cache and Quernmore- Brackenbrae, when we set the series, there were lambs in the field, please keep dogs on a lead.
Please re hide well, the film cannister should be inside the plastic bag, not vice versa. We thought this would be the best way to keep the log book dry, as it was already a tight squeeze for the log book on its own. Thanks.
