This is one of several geocaches placed along the Quarantine and Cemetery Trails at Cayo Costa State Park. There is no bushwhacking needed, so enjoy an easy hike along the trails of this wonderful barrier island state park. When you are finished, spend some time looking for shells along the beach, swimming, or enjoy lunch at the picnic area. The park is accessible only by private boat or passenger ferry and there is a $2.00 fee for the park.
Pioneer cemetery is one of two cemeteries on this barrier island. One of the most famous people buried here is Harbor Pilot Captain Peter Nelson who died in 1919. He was a native of Denmark who founded the town of Alva, which he named after the flower, white sabatia that he saw growing in abundance there. His tombstone says he died in 1919, which was at the end of the great Influenza Pandemic that killed 675,000 Americans and 20-40 million people worldwide.
The coordinates for this cache will take you to his tombstone. From there you will need to navigate 25 feet WSW (250 degrees) to find the cache. You will need to bring your own pen. It is not on the ground; do not disturb the shells on the graves looking for it.
