Geocache Description:

The Anglican church of St John the Baptist on the corner of Steabler and Warden Streets was built over a hundred years ago and the cornerstone of the original building was laid in 1874. Eventually the church became too small for the congregation and the maintenance cost too high. A plan had to be made and an extension was added. The old part was then demolished and rebuilt. The foundation stone of the new church was laid on 9 February 1906 by His Royal Highness Arthur William Patrick Albert, Duke of Connaught, and son of Queen Victoria. He was in Harrismith at the time to inspect the garrison. A section of the original organ can still be seen in the church. In 1923 the porch and belfry were added to the church. The cache is on the outside of the church around the corner, feel with your hand behind a sandstone!
