IL CASTELLO MALASPINA DI MASSA

La città di Massa ebbe origine nel basso medioevo (880 circa) colla decadenza del porto marmifero di Luni.
Il suo nome significava “grande proprietà fondiaria” per cui aveva abbinato un aggettivo indicandone il proprietario: Massa “ Lunense “ quando era del Vescovo di Luni, “dei Marchesi” quando era dei Malaspina, “Cyba” dai principi Cybo, successori dei Malaspina , “Ducale” quando era del ducato di Modena.
La sua posizione collinare permetteva un buon controllo della costa. Nell’ XI secolo era una “corte fortificata” dei longobardi Obertenghi. Nel 1164 l’imperatore Federico Barbarossa attesta la proprietà del “castello di Massa” a Obizzo Malaspina. Da allora il castello è sempre stato proprietà dei signori della zona, subendo vari rimaneggiamenti, fino ad essere, quando qui c’era la Linea Gotica, un carcere.

Oggi domina la città sottostante e vi si accede o dal centro città o dal parcheggio del waypoint (10 minuti a piedi).

THE CASTLE OF MALASPINA OF MASSA

The town of Massa originated after the decay of the marble port of Luni (880 aC).
The name Massa meant generically “big country property” , so it was matched with the name of the owner : “Lunense” when of Bishop of Luni, “of Marquess” when of Malaspina, “Cyba” when of the princess Cybo, successors of Malaspina, “Ducal” when of duke of Modena.
The location on the hills allowed a good control of the shore . During the XI century it was a walled court of the Lombard family of Obertenghi. On 1164 the emperor Fredric Redbird attested the property of the “castle of Massa” to Obizzo Malaspina. From then on the owner of the place lived in the castle, so it was often modified. During the second war it was a prison.

Today the castle overlooks the town and you can walk to it rising from the city o from the park of the way point (10 minutes).

CACHE LOCATION: IN SMALL FISSURE OF THE ROCK FACE ON THE LEFT, 4 METERS BEFORE THE WALL OF THE MAIN IRON GATE, AT 1.5 M FROM GROUND.
