I've been making maple syrup since I was 13. This cache is being created to celebrate our 10th year making syrup in our own Sugar-bush. We average 50 gallons of maple syrup each year, although this year yielded on 22 gallons.... too warm too fast. When making maple syrup it requires 40 gallons of sap to produce 1 gallon of syrup therefor the ration is 40:1. What many folks do not know is that maple trees are not the only trees you can tap (drill hole and insert a spile) to produce syrup. To find this cache you will need to look for a Birch tree. A camo painted sap bucket is mounted to the tree (no harm done to the tree). Yep, you can make Birch syrup but the sugar content is much lower then that of the maple tree. the only set back to producing Birch syrup is that the ratio is much, much higher! It is amazingly 120:1 on average! Much longer processing time if you do not have the right equipment. I encourage you to Google this. There are trading items all relating to the outdoors.
