Geocache Description:

While out finding The Gateway to Angels - Shady Stop GC3AMXF, I stopped to read the info boards set up nearby. I read Donalda Avenue was named after the daughter of George Munroe, Secretary-Treasurer of the Municipality of Kildonan for 37 years (Munroe Avenue is named after him).

Since I find local history to be very interesting, I thought I would look into it a little more. It turns out the only source of information on this is a book on the origin of Winnipeg street names. Any information I find on Donalda Avenue being named after one of George's daughters point back to this one book.

In my research on George Munroe, I discovered he married Matilda Inman Hopper September 10, 1885 and they had three daughters, Mary McWilliams Munroe (b 1889), Christina Fraser Munroe (b 1892), and Marjory Hopper Munroe (b 1894). I checked The Manitoba Historical Society and the I searched Munroe in the Manitoba Vital Statistics database and only found the three daughters above and no listing for a Donalda Munroe.

I am not sure I will figure this mystery out, but I did discover a funny coincidence about these daughter's names. Mary is my sister, Christina is my niece, Marjory is my mother, and Donalda is my aunt!
