Kinsol Trestle - An Island Spirit Legacy.
The Cowichan Valley Trail will take you from Duncan through Lake Cowichan and down past the Kinsol Trestle following former CN and E&N railway lines. With many access points and 8 trestles, it's a beautiful trail to walk, jog or bike. From the Island Spirit Team, we hope you enjoy your time in the Cowichan Valley.
All the Island Spirit Legacy Caches are within a 2 steps of the trail, unless otherwise noted. There is no need to bushwack or trample the vegetation.
Kinsol Trestle
When the Kinsol Trestle was completed in 1920 over 6000 timbers were used. It's a sight to see at 125 feet tall and a curved 615 feet long, making it the longest wooden trestle in the commonwealth. It was abandoned in 1979 and unfortunately rotting beams, vandalism and fires made the trestle terribly dangerous. Thankfully a group of citizens weren't ready to let it go and started a restoration drive and 7.5 million dollars later, it was reopened in 2011 letting walkers, cyclists and equestrian folk again cross the Koksilah River.
