An easy roadside cache on the Kiepersol road between White River and Hazyview.
Just off the R40 between White River and Hazyview is the Kiepersol road. It meanders through rolling hills of sub-tropical forests and farms with giant avocado trees, mangos tress, banana plantations and macadamia trees.
Kiepersol is the name of an indigenous tree (Cussonia spicata), also known as the Lowveld Cabbage Tree; Afrikaans: Laeveldse kiepersol. This tree proliferates in the Lowveld area with its unique beauty and unusual shapes. It is also believed that the name 'kiepersol' comes from the Portuguese Quinta-sol or Indian Kitty-sol, which are both words for a parasol or sunshade.
The wood is soft and light and was used for the brake-blocks of wagons. The leaves provide good fodder for stock and the Zulu name refers to this tree as goats' food. The thick root can be peeled and eaten raw as food or as a source of water. Recent research sets out to investigate the traditional medical uses of Cussonia and Schefflera to treat infections, inflammation and malaria.
