The Cache is located on a footpath through farmland from Brotton to Huntcliffe. Nearest parking is in either in Brotton or Saltburn.
The Cleveland Way footpath is about 1/2 mile away so an easy diversion to the cache.
The view from the cache encompasses 180' from the North York Moors in the South to Tees Bay, Hartlepool and beyond in the North. On a clear day the Pennines in the West are also visible.
Of particular interest is the wind farm being built in the Tees Bay. The offshore installation and commissioning is scheduled for completion in 2012.
The wind farm is located 1.5km from the coast, between the mouth of the River Tees and the town of Redcar. There will be 27 turbines (in 3 rows) in water depths up to 20mtrs.
Each turbine will have a capacity of 2.3 MW and we are informed they will be able to generate clean, green, pollution free electricity equivalent to the typical annual domestic demand of most of the households in Redcar and Cleveland.
The turbines are to be installed in a configuration optimised to prevailing winds. The spacing between turbines will be not less than 300m between turbines and 600m between rows.
Wind turbines start to generate electricity at a windspeed of approximately 3.5m/s, their output increasing up to their maximum rated power at a windspeed of approximately 14m/s. As the wind speed increases further, the output is limited to the maximum until the wind speed exceeds 25m/s when the wind turbine automatically shuts down.
This is a disguised micro cache, so no room for swaps, travelbugs or geocoins. A pair of tweezers might prove handy for extracting the log and you'll need to bring your own pen.
