Geocache Description:

Peanut butter jar with logbook, pen and items to exchange.

The Postel family was a very influential family in Mascoutah. They owned the wheat mill (two buildings on the S. corner of Main and Railway), the corn mill (6th block of S. Railway), large tracts of farmland, and one of the local banks. The last Postel to live in Mascoutah was Bernice Postel, who died Dec. 10, 2009. She lived in the house to the North on this block. Postel family members also owned the house to the West, the Southwest, and the large house with slate roof 2 blocks South of here. The house immediately to the South was built by a foreman who worked at one of the Postel mills.

The house to the southwest was built in 1903 for Postels from overseas to visit the Worlds Fair in 1904. The large swimming pool to the west of this house was part of the property, and was filled with water from a natural salt-water well. The pool was later separated from the Postel house and legally attached to the house to the west, which was much smaller. John Bailey did many improvements and additions to that house and property, and later sold it to one of the City Managers of Mascoutah.
Bernice once told me about the first Postel to this area: He spent a great deal of time and money building the first mill, and just as it was completed it burned down before he obtained any insurance. He wrote to his family back home (in Europe, I believe) that he was calling it quits and coming back home. They wrote back and told him to ‘pull up his boots and get back to work.’ He did, and he rebuilt the mill and his business did very well.
