Geocache Description:

Part of the Fort Smith Parks and Recreation Geocache Series, be sure to check them all out!

This park is leased to the city, you can ride the Ferris wheel or carousel for only $1 what a deal! Also, stop and get a meal. Compass park was named just that due to its design has a large compass built into it. Compass park is predominately Autumn Blaze maple Trees, these have thin bark. If you look at the south west side of the bark you see that the sun has literally burned the bark away from the tree. This is known as sun scald. This will eventually lead to the demise of these trees, exposed heartwood leads to rot and invites insects inside. As they die they are being replaced with Shumard Oak, a tree much better suited to the environment. It is very important to plant the right tree for the right location. This is an great example of why. For more information on the park or its trees visit Fortsmithparks.com.
