Geocache Description:

This little series is named after little known facts I read in a book and was amazed by them.

TEDDY BEAR

In 1902 President Teddy Roosevelt made a trip to the south. While there, he went on a hunting trip sponsored by his Southern host. Wanting their honored guest to return home with a trophy, they trapped a bear cub for him to kill. Roosevelt was disgusted. He rufused to shoot the helpless little animal.

The story gained national attention. A cartoon in the Washington Star showed Teddy Roosevelt, rifle in hand, with his back turned on a cute, cowering baby bear.

Morris Michtom, owner of a Brooklyn toy store, was inspired by the cartoon to make a stuffed bear cub. Intending it only as a display, he placed the stuffed bear in his toy store window, and next to it placed a copy of the cartoon from the newspaper. To Michtom's surprise, he was besieged by customers eager to buy a "Teddy's bear."

Michtom was soon manufacturing Teddy bears by the thousands. The proceeds enabled him, in 1903, to form the Ideal Toy Company.

TWINKIES

Twinkies were invented in 1931 by James Dewar. He originally called them Little Shortcake Fingers, but while on a business trip, Dewar and a friend passed a shoe factory sign that read: "Home of Twinkle Toe Shoes." Dewar had been looking for a new name for his product. His friend suggested Twinkle Fingers. Dewar shortened this to Twinkies.

WEDDING RING

Have you ever wondered why married people wear wedding rings, or why the ring is always worn on the third finger of the left hand? The custom comes to us from ancient Egypt. To the Egyptians, the ring was a symbol of eternal love, for all circles are without begining or end. If the ring broke, it meant bad luck. If it were taken off, love would escape from the heart. The Egyptians believed that a long vien ran from the third finger of the left hand to the heart. That is how the third finger, left hand, became the ring finger.

WIRE COAT HANGER

One morning in 1903, Albert J. Parkhouse, arrived as usual at his workplace, the Timberlake Wire and Novelty Company in Jackson, Michigan, which specialized in making lampshade frames and other wire items. When he went to hang his hat and coat on the hooks provided for the workers, Parkhouse found all were in use. Annoyed - and inspired - Parkhouse picked up a piece of wire, bent it into two large oblong hoops opposite each other, and twisted both ends at the center into a hook. Then he hung up his coat and went to work.

The company apparently thought it was a good idea, because they took out a patent on it. In those days, companies were allowed to take out patents on any of their employees' inventions. The company made a fortune, Parkhouse never got a penny.
