This is another cache in the series I’m doing in and around Winnipeg. These series of caches will focus on streets that “jump” and continue on.
This cache is located on Wilkes Avenue in the Brockville neighborhood. Wilkes runs east/west and starts at Waverly Street. It then runs west until it hits into Route 90. This is where it “jumps over” Route 90 and starts again on the west side of Shaftsbury Boulevard. From there it runs west until it gets to the perimeter where it turns into highway 427.
Wilkes Avenue is named for Charles R. Wilkes (1825-1910). He was born in Toronto, Upper Canada in 1825 of English parentage. In 1850 he went to California and spent several years in the gold fields, returning to Brantford where he became proprietor of the Taft Foundry, which was later amalgamated with the Waterous Engine Company. After he moved to Owen Sound, Ontario, and became a Clerk of the Division Court until 1870. In 1872 he was called to the Bar in Toronto and practiced law in Owen Sound until he left for Winnipeg in 1882. On several occasions he was a candidate for Winnipeg's mayoralty. He had strong faith in the future of Winnipeg and particularly in the section south of Portage Avenue as residential prospects.Wilkes died in Winnipeg on 9 July 1910.
For the FTF there will be a FTF certificate, and a FTF mini geocoin.
Congratulations to klblue for First to Find.
