Geocache Description:

This is a series of 47 caches along the Kerry Ridgeway – a gentle 15 mile route from Cider House Farm near Kerry in Wales, across the border to Bishops Castle in Shropshire. It holds a long tradition as a trade and drovers’ route from Wales to the lowland English markets.

The ancient pathway forges a route through heather moors, woodlands and bilberry rich heaths, and follows a ridge top overlooking Wales on the one side and England on the other. It never dips below 1000 feet above sea level, resulting in remarkable views in all directions, up to 70 miles on a clear day.

The caches have been placed with the kind permission of the landowners, Forestry Commission and Powys County Council. Special thanks to Ginny from Powys County Council for all her help and advice, and for allowing me to use the information from their trail leaflet. As always respect the countryside, private land and livestock. Please keep dogs under close control at all times.

The route has been divided into four sections – all sections can be completed on foot, bike, or horse. Sections 2 and 4 can be done as a drive-by, but please be aware that the roads are narrow and not always in the best state of repair – watch out for potholes, especially if it has been raining. Drive carefully and be considerate where you park.

SECTION 1: Cider House to Block Wood (caches #1 - #11) Parking either N52 27.278 W003 18.767 (Cider House Car Park) or N52 28.075 W003 15.272 (Block Wood Car Park)

SECTION 2: Kerry Pole to Long Plantation (caches #12 - #25) Can be completed as drive by or numerous places for parking en-route

SECTION 3: Long Plantation to Pantglas (caches #26 - #37) Parking available at N52 29.143 W003 09.315 (Long Plantation), N52 29.300 W003 08.738 (Turbary Nature Reserve) or N52 29.933 W003 06.666 (Pantglas)

SECTION 4: Pantglas to Bishops Castle (caches #38 - #47) Can be completed as drive by or several places for parking en-route and in Bishops Castle.

PLEASE BRING A PEN

KERRY POLE

This is the start of section 2 which can either be walked, ridden or driven. Perched on top of a telegraph pole, a red fox weathervane overlooks a junction of ancient routes. The history of the Pole itself is an enigma as mysterious as these old routeways! The Kerry Ridgeway waymark logo is based on the red fox design.

The owner of the nearby property is aware of the cache location. Please respect his privacy, there is no need to be near the property. Please be considerate when parking - the roads are narrow, and well used by farm vehicles.
