Geocache Description:

Historic Backroads, Dept

Photocopy of 1910 photograph in Louis Sanchez Collection, Oakland, California. Rephotographed August 1940. View of front - Frank Norris Memorial, Redwood Retreat Road, Gilroy, Santa Clara County, CA

Redwood Retreat Road is a fairly old road. If you check the dates along the few bridges along here you will see they date to 1925, the road predates even them. The road is named for the Frank Norris Cabin or Redwood Retreat. Though Norris bought the land, west of Gilroy the year he died, it remains uncertain what role the retreat played in Norris' works.
Born Benjamin Franklin Norris, Jr. March 5, 1870, in Chicago Illinois, Frank Norris was well traveled and educated before embarking upon his brief career as a social novelist. Notable works include McTeague (1899) set in San Francisco; The Octopus: A Story of California (1901) set in Southern California presenting a view of battles between ranchers and railroad tycoons and The Pit (1903) set in the Chicago Board of Trading Building centered around a man's efforts to corner to the world wheat market. Norris died October 25, 1902 (aged 32) in San Francisco, California and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, in Oakland, California.
The Redwood Retreat is a National Historic Landmark.
Cache is about 5 feet above ground with an off road pull out nearby for parking.
