Geocache Description:

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game describes the area in their brochure: “The Mendenhall Wetlands are a Mecca for waterfowl hunters, wildlife viewers and outdoor enthusiasts alike… The Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge was established in 1976 to protect natural habitat and game populations – especially waterfowl – as well as provide for recreation. The refuge is now one of Juneau’s most popular recreational areas…”

We thought, “why not make it a better place for everyone who loves it?” After finding the right tide needed to access the islands last fall, we found swarms of plastic bottles, bullet casings, car tires, foam boards and more washed up in the tide line. This area does not get the privilege of being selected for the city-wide spring clean-up and it really shows. Hopefully we can get at least 10 people out to help haul trash off the wetlands, making it a better place for all the Wild Things!

There are two traditional caches in the immediate area so this could be a real gold mine for some fun finds. The way point for parking is N 58-21.174’ and W 134-30.708’ and the meeting place is a .2 mile walk across the muddy flats. This CITO is scheduled to take place a few days after summer solstice so we’re hoping for some incredibly nice weather, but expect rain and wind! The tide will be -1.3 making it a perfect time to get on the wetlands. Expect wet and muddy conditions but hope for sun!

Gloves, bags and refreshments will be available. There are a few car tires and big pieces out there so a wheel barrow or 2 may be handy!

6/20/12 UPDATE: The weather is supposed to be incredibly sunny and clear! Highs this weekend will be in the 70's so plan for sun and bugs! Bring water out to the islands. We'll have some at the parking area. Litter Free and Alaskan Coastal CODE Keepers will be helping out too...
