A Christmas Carol Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ThePiggyWyggles: Apologies to those who have been looking for this cache without success recently. The co-owners have moved a long way away from GZ and have not been able to return to check to see if it is still in situ.

We now feel that it has probably been muggled and so, regretfully, we have archived it permanently.

Geocache Description:

This is a micro cache in a camo. Take your own pencil.

Holly Copse lies less than 300 metres from Oldmoor Wood. There are no surfaced tracks within the woodland. Three entrance points are maintained. There is a well-used permissive path running through the centre of the wood along its length, which adjoins a popular bridleway/track from Strelley village.

The woodland is diverse aged with the oldest oak, beech and sweet chestnut trees dating from around 1790. There is an under storey of sycamore, holly, goat willow, hawthorn, rowan, elder and some patches of snowberry. The site was planted at the same time as the nearby Oldmoor Wood in the 1790s by Thomas Edge, the owner and designer of the Strelley Estate at that time.

Given its roadside location and small size the ground flora of Holly Copse is surprisingly notable, with many ancient woodland indicator species including a large carpet of wood anemone, occasional bluebell and yellow archangel.

The bridleway passing Holly Copse is part of the ancient “Monks’ Way” dating back to the early Middle Ages and linking Lenton Priory to Beauville Priory, Felley Priory and on to Newstead Abbey.

Holly Copse is owned & managed by The Woodland Trust from whom permission has been granted to hide this cache. Please take special care not to disturb flora and fauna when in the woods and especially while looking for the cache.
