A quick park and cache located near the former railway station in Skibbereen.
Parking is avalable at the roadside near the enterance to the local park.
The station was once part of an extensive rail network that linked West Cork towns to Cork city.
Construction of the West Cork railway started in cork in 1851 and reached Skibbereen in 1877
From Skibbereen branch lines ran to Baltimore, Ballydehob & Schull. The main line to Cork connected to the Cork Bantry line at Drimoleague.
The Railway system was closed in 1961 as it was losing £50,000 per year.
Only hints now remain of what was once a vital transport network.
Near the cache one can see the water tower that was used to refill the steam engines, also a hand operated freight crane.
The station building and platform are now the home of a candle manufacturing company.
The Cache itself is a small plastic cap containing a logbook. Please replace the cache securely after your visit.
