The modern A685 now follows the course taken by the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway on the south side of the River Lune. Before it was built, the main road ran on the north side of the dale, running from Tebay, crossing the river at Gaisgill, through Kelleth to Newbiggin. It's now a quiet 'backwater' with some interesting corners to explore. One of the main attractions is the view across the valley to the rising bulk of the Howgills. This old road also makes a nice bike ride.

The series is designed to encourage travellers to make a small diversion from the hustle of the main road, we hope you enjoy it. The series can be done in either direction, however, the final multi-cache will need some information from a couple of earlier caches, so west-east is best for this. The series contains a variety of sizes and styles, they aren't all drive-bys and some will require a short walk, where boots might be good in damp weather. The Terrain rating also varies, so read the cache page for more info of what's involved. Take a pen!
This cache is near the large red sandstone Rayne Bridge which carries the road over the Lune. From Tebay it's the 2nd left turning, not the one to Orton! Pull into the gateway in front of the bench. Although quiet, the road still has large farm vehicles & trucks now and again so park safely.
