Geocache Description:

Quick P&G at another historic site.

In 1735, the once-powerful Natchez Indian tribe was uprooted from its homeland in Mississippi by the French. They established a village just above Peachtree Creek, and eventually merged with the Cherokees.

By 1820, the area that is now Valley River Valley had been established as a center for Baptist missionary work among the Indians. The Natchez village became the site of Reverend Evan Jones' Baptist mission, which contained several buildings including a gristmill and a sawmill.

Reverend Jones was the man responsible for translating the New Testament into the Cherokee Language, and for compiling a Cherokee spelling book.

When the Cherokees were forced to move west, Reverend Jones chose to move his mission with them.

And now you know the rest of the story.
