Wild Ginger
Wild ginger is a plant with many namesincluding British Columbia Wild Ginger, Western Wild Ginger, or long-tailed Wild Ginger. It is found in the moist shaded forests of Vancouver Island and throughout southern BC. The rhizome (stem-root structure) has very shallow roots. Each plant has a pair of beautiful dark green heart-shaped evergreen leaves. The plant releases a lemon-ginger scent when crushed. In the spring, it develops distinct hirsute (hairy) cup-shaped, brown-purple to green-yellow flowers which terminate in three long gracefully curved lobes, often concealed by leaves.
