Here are a few historical facts of Hout Bay:
1488 -1510 The Portuguese rounded the Cape on a number of occasions.
1607 – British ship Consent arrived for a day. Chapman’s Peak derived its name from an account written by John Chapman, Master’s Mate
1652 Dutch occupation. Wood was harvested for repairing ships, hence the name meaning wood bay
1781 - 1783 Two batteries were erected – East Fort and West Fort, both of which can be seen today; neither were ever fired in anger.
1984 Mariner’s Wharf complex was opened

Hout Bay has a large fishing fleet, mainly bringing in snoek and tuna. In the season the crayfish boats arrive to be greeted by crowds wanting to buy up their catch.
Enjoy your meander through the busy harbour area.
