Fosnavåg city ;-) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If the owner wants it reopened, send me an e-mail and I’ll be happy to unarchive the cache listing if it still satisfies the requirement/guidelines.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,

Geocache Description:

Welcome to Herøy

The island community of Herøy is set against the backdrop of the Sunnmøre Alps on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Six of the eight islands in the community are connected by bridges. Fosnavåg – town near Runde – represents one of the largest fishing communities in the country. The coastal centre of Fosnavåg is also among the most innovative towns in Norway as it has developed an extensive offshore shipping industry with more than 100 offshore vessels and eight offshore shipping companies. With its natural harbour, Fosnavåg is a place where you can experience a typical coastal atmosphere. Herøy, with a population of app. 8700 and a land area of 135 km2, is located southwest of Ålesund. Flights, an express boat, excellent roads and daily stops of the coastal steamer ’Hurtigrute’ in Torvik make the community very accessible by land, sea and air. Furthest to the west one finds Runde, internationally known as ’treasure island’ and famous for its bird cliffs which are the most southerly in Scandinavia. Millions of seabirds breed here. For its unique characteristics, the island has been designated as a protected area, however, daily guided tours by boat around the bird cliffs, guided hiking tours and easy access to the cliff on well-marked paths enable visitors to experience the teeming bird life at first hand. Here, one can see colonies of puffins, guillemots, gannets and razorbills, 200 species all together, and the impressive white-tailed eagle among them. Some years ago, a remarkable treasure of coins, lost in the wreckage of the Dutch schooner ’Akerendam’, was discovered right near the island. Divers continue to be on the hunt for treasures – among them the gold from the Spanish ship ’Castilla Negro’, said to have sunk in 1589. The treasure of Runde Akerendam Another unique island is Skorpa with its rough natural beauty and a population of wild goats. Herøy has a rich history with many old and well-preserved trading places, including Kjeldsund, Flåvær and certainly Herøy Farm with its coastal museum and the Herøyfestival. Herøy Gard The Kvalsund boats dating back to the Viking era were unearthed on Nerlandsøy, and Herøy’s historical legacy further includes several grave mounds from the same period, e.g. at Løsetstranda. The many islands with their diverse flora and fauna provide outdoor-lovers and sport fishers with the opportunity to fulfill a dream, both on shore and by boat. Why not try and experience the annual spring cod fishery here?
