MAN'S BEST FRIEND, JINX
In these hills lies
a dog named
Jinx.
He hiked every trail
in these mountains
with me and taught
me everything what
unconditional love is.
I have never met Jinx or his owner, but by the looks of the memorial plaque posted along this trail, Jinx and his owner were the best of friends. So Jinx and your human companion this cache is for you two.
Cache is located along Kealia Trail. Hours for this cache are 7AM-6PM. Cachers can enter at the west gate of Dillingham Airfield. Parking is available behind the control tower. The toal distance for the trail is 6 miles round trip. Elevation gain is 1482 feet. This trail also connects to Kuaokala Ridge Loop which is another 6 miles. It takes about 2.5 to 3.0 hours to complete Kealia Trail and 2.5 to 3.0 hours to complete Kuaokala Ridge Loop. So...if you want to do both trails give yourself about 5 to 7 hours to complete them, dependent on how fast or slow you like to hike. IF you are only going in for this cache you should be in and out under 2 hours.
There are other caches between these two trails. If you decide to do both trails back to back take a minimum of 3 liters of water per person, fruit, power bars, sunscreen and a hat. Don't start the hike too late in the day like we did once (only took one time to learn our lesson). Trying to conquer the 18 switchbacks at dusk was NOT a fun adventure.
