Geocache Description:

Cache # 39.

The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is a wonderful cycling trail between Wangaratta and Bright, with a side track running from Everton Station to Beechworth. The trail is suitable for road bikes.

These are essentially caches placed for cyclists using the trail but there is easy parking for cars at each GZ.

In 1878 this 5-head gold battery was established on Buffalo Creek, powered by a huge water wheel. Water was later supplied by an 8km water race. This channel was dug by hand by members of the Paul family and carried diverted water from further up the Buffalo Creek Valley. Crushings began to slow down in the 1920's and eventually ceased in 1937.

In the 1970's the stamper was still at Buffalo Creek, covered by blackberries. In the late 1970's the blackberries were burnt and the stamper collapsed. The metal parts were to be sold as scrap metal.

The Bienvenu family purchased it in 1979 to preserve its heritage value. They removed the remaining parts to their property using two tractors and a crude sled. Twenty-five years later it was donated for public display to ensure preservation.

You can read more about this historic stamper on the sign nearby.

I hope you enjoy your stops along the journey.

The cache is NOT a nano. At time of placement it contained a Log Sheet only. Please bring your own PEN.

Please ensure it is replaced carefully so that it remains out of sight.

CONGRATULATIONS - FTF - Yowie3747!
