Geocache Description:

The town of Burnham on Crouch is one of Englands many hidden gems and is very popular both as a place to live and with tourists visiting the town and the wider Essex area. The town will forever be connected to the sea and the town's yachting heritage dates back to the 19th century. Yachting is an important part of life in the town. Burnham is home to a number of sailing clubs. It has a history where the River Crouch and the sea beyond played a very important part. Burnham was traditionally a port town, used both for ferry services and fishing purposes, particularly oyster. The town now has a proud reputation as a yachting centre, and each year hosts Burnham Week, which usually takes place in August each year. There is a regular ferry service between Essex Marina on Wallasea Island and Burnham on Crouch Quay.

Burnham's cultural life today is a lively, varied one. One of the most significant events in its calendar is the Illuminated Carnival, which takes place annually and features a host of fascinating activities. Since the 1920s the town has its own cinema, the Rio Cinema, which shows a wide variety of up to date film releases. Burnham On Crouch also is home to an impressive array of architectural sites, and is home to many listed buildings. Of particular note is the modernist structure that is the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, which was designed by Joseph Emberton in the 1930s.

The Dengie Peninsula surrounds the Burnham area, and contains a number of small settlements within it, many of which take Burnham as their focal point and centre. This means that Burnham on Crouch, as the principal town in the area, has an important role within that part of Essex.
