Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of internationally placed caches to honour renowned mountaineer Conrad Kain.

About this Cache Area...

Mount Ethelbert (3176 m) was first climbed in 1915 by a party led by the Austrian-born mountain guide Conrad Kain (1883-1934). Kain was the first professional guide hired by the Alpine Club of Canada, and he completed first ascents on many of the region’s highest and most difficult peaks. Included among these pioneering climbs are the world famous Bugaboo Spire (1916), which lies hidden behind this group of peaks, and Mount Robson (1913), the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies.

The peaks of the Purcell Range were landmarks for the early steamboats transporting people and goods on the upper Columbia River. Captain Frank Armstrong operated several of these sternwheelers from 1886 until after the completion of the railway in 1915. Sister Ethelbert visited the upper Columbia on behalf of the Saint Mary's Hospital of New Westminster in the late 1800s. Following her death, Captain Armstrong named the highest peak visible from this section of the valley in her honour. .
