Welcome to one of the newest streets in Salem! Bill Frey Dr. This unique street starts at Portland Road, raises up and over the Union Pacific RR (formerly Southern Pacific and Oregon & California RR) tracks then quickly drops down into the new Claggett Creek Natural area. It gets very close to the Portland & Western Railroad (formerly Burlington Northern and Oregon Electric) before it spins around under itself to reach Industrial Drive.
This cache has a command view of the road loop and both railroads. The P&W (to the west) was an old electric railway built around 1912 linking Portland with Eugene. It had overhead wire above the tracks. Note the high tension wires that are still parallel the line. This line see a couple to few freight trains a day. The UP to the east was built in the late 1800's linking Portland to California. This line see 25+ trains a day plus Amtrak Cascades & Coast Starlight trains.
