A new landmark has recently been installed near the start of the Mt Iron walking track near Wanaka. To commemorate the towns distinction of holding the worlds first recorded dog trials in 1867 a 2.7m high steel statue of a shepherd and his dog gaze across to the base of Mt Iron. The base of Mt Iron near the statue used to be used for the dog trial events until recent years.
