1869 Boxing Day Tragedy:
On 26 December 1869 local fisherman, Patrick Wee, agreed to take four men (all named Richard) on his boat to the Quarantine Station at Point Nepean where they were employed. Soon after they left the jetty weather turned violent and the boat capsized. All five men drowned. Only the bodies of Patrick Wee and Richard Barry were recovered.

When I began visiting the cemetery in 2008 after my dear friend Melissa was buried here, the headstone of Patrick Wee was a broken stone with only a name. The Rye Historical Society has since restored the graves of Richard Barry and Patrick Wee. Beside Patrick Wee is bured a Mauri named Paul, believed to have been a friend of Patrick Wee.

Melissa Sue Hooper passed away in August 2008 from an accidental fall at 20 years of age. I place this cache near her grave in memory of my much loved friend.
