House Finch

Originally from Oahu, House Finches were originally introduced in North America down in San Francisco. It did not take them long to spread across the continent. A cheery looking little bird with a red head and breast they are frequently found on backyard bird feeders. Only the males sport the red head and breast and this coulor can vary from yellow through orange to the common red. This variation comes from the fact that the colouration of the finches is a result of the pigments in the food that they eat while they are moulting. Females prefer the redder males.
