The Cowichan Valley Trail will take you from Duncan through Lake Cowichan and down past the Kinsol Trestle following former CN and E&N railway lines. With many access points and 8 trestles, it's a beautiful trail to walk, jog or bike. From the Island Spirit Team, we hope you enjoy your time in the Cowichan Valley.
All the Island Spirit Legacy Caches are within a 2 steps of the trail, unless otherwise noted. There is no need to bushwack or trample the vegetation.
Western Tiger Swallowtail
Western Tiger Swallowtail butterflies are common along the south west edge of BC, including here on Vancouver Island. They can be particularly common in residential areas where birches, willows and poplars are used as garden trees as these are some of the plants that this species of butterfly larvae feed on. Females lay only a few eggs on a leaf prior to flying off to another leaf and the eggs only take 7 to 10 days to hatch. In August they will find a sheltered spot in which to pupate, hibernating until the following summer.
