The Elan Valley covers 70 square miles of lake and countryside and is situated to the west of Rhayader, Powys. The dams and reservoirs are situated within an area of outstanding scenic beauty, supplying water to Birmingham and many areas of Mid and South Wales. They were constructed at the turn of the twentieth century, forcing more than 100 people who lived in the valley to leave. There are now five lakes, Caban Coch, Garreg-Ddu, Pen-y-Garreg, Craig-Goch and Claerwen reservoir.
