Hic Virgilius tumulus est

Stop geocacher and read these few words:
This is the tomb of Virgil

Virgil lived in Campi Flegrei. It is believed he wrote the Aeneid here. When he felt ill during a journey to Asia, Emperor Augustus ordered to bring him back to Italy. He died at the age of 51 in Brindisi in 19 AD. An old legend says that the Virgil´s remains were buried in an imperial tomb inside the entrance of the Crypta Neapolitana, and an epigraph from 1455 sill in situ declares ¨hic Virgilius tumulus est¨.

The Crypta Neapolitana was built by Agripa to quickly move troops from Neapolis (Naples) to Portus Julius in Pozzuoli. Architect L. Cocceio Aucto was responsible for the works. Originally, the Crypta was 711 metres long, 16 metres wide, enough for two chariots, and 3 metres high. The tunnel has no ventilation and is so dark that 17th century books explain that drivers used to shout ¨seaward¨or ¨mountain¨to avoid collisions between oncoming carriages. On the right side of the tunnel there is a channel. It is one of the branches of the Serino Aqueduct.

In this nice park you can also admire the Aediculum (a big plaque) of Viceroy Pietro of Aragon, erected in honour of his restoration works, and the tomb of the famous Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi.
