"He's gonna be a giant!" the veterinarian said. "Just look at those feet - he's going to grow into those, mark my words." I was new to this. My wife grew up with cats. Our family was strictly dogs. The tiny orange and white waif on the exam table looked so forlorn. He trembled and had the most pitiful of cries. Needless to say, we fell instantly in love with him. We named him Fezzik in honor of the giant from the movie "The Princess Bride," and the vet was right, our tiny kitten became a robust, healthy giant of a cat. Fezzik lived his life in the country with us, enjoyed all the fun of outdoor life, and took advantage of all the comforts accorded to an indoor cat. Over the years of his life, he shared his domain with other cats in our house, grudgingly in some cases, happily in others. But, he was always the "top cat."
He also tolerated the arrival of our two daughters. Fezzik seemed to know that our toddler meant no ill will toward him when she tried to "pet" the kitty and the contact was more of a swat than a pat. He'd just cringe, lay his ears back, and wait for the child to move on to something else. If I ever tried a stunt like that, I pulled back a scratched up hand! He tolerated being dressed up by the girls. There was even an attempt to "put curlers in his hair," but he never even growled at the kids. It was as if he knew...
Fezzik stayed a part of our family for almost 14 years. He was our first kitty, and will always be fondly remembered.
