Geocache Description:

A quick C & D on the side of the Fosseway - which was once a Roman Road and, therefore, very stony. ALso very, very busy so care is needed.

Going Up the Stony Road 1. The Romans were adept at constructing roads, which they called viae. They were intended for carrying material from one location to another. It was permitted to walk or pass and drive cattle, vehicles, or traffic of any description along the path. The viae differed from the many other smaller or rougher roads, bridle-paths, drifts, and tracks. To make the roads the Romans used stones, broken stones mixed with cement and sand, cement mixed with broken tiles, curving stones - so the water could drain, and on the top they used tightly packed paving stones. The Romans made their roads like walls. The Fosse Way was a Roman Road in England that linked Exeter (Isca Dumnoniorum) in South West England to Lincoln (Lindum Colonia) in Lincolnshire, via Ilchester (Lindinis), Bath (Aquae Sulis),Cirencester (Corinium) and Leicester (Ratae Corieltauvorum). Okay, so the Fosseway is not so stony nowadays but there may still be a few small ones lying about in odd places! All the caches in this series of 3 have easy parking but please be aware that, while you are unlikely to meet a Roman Legion, this is an extremely busy and fast road so please ensure any children and animals are kept safe. If you've done the Going Down the Stony Road series you will think you know what you are looking for. But this one has changed! No room for pen so make sure you take one with you.
