Geocache Description:

Western Reserve Greenway Trail GeoTrail. This event kicks off the trail as a coined Geotrail. Logbook will open at 9AM and event will run into the afternoon. Caches can easily be searched by WRGT: there are currently over 160 caches along our 26 miles of paved trail. This event will have several temp caches set up near the event area. The WRGT is a walking and bike trail (No motor vehicles other than wheelchairs). The trail is the home of my Walk or Ride series which is currently a 107 cache series. There will be food available along with information about the trail. Passports for the trail will be available at that time also coins will be on hand. Im looking into having vendors set up for the event. Bike rentals are available for the trail. I will be having prize givaways and an official ribbon cutting cerimony to open the trail. I have many long hours into creating this geotrail and hope everyone enjoys it.

The Western Reserve Greenway is the former PennCentral Right-of-way. This line was closed in April of 1976. Prior to PennCentral it was known as USRA 714 rail line. This Right-of-way that served industries back then has now been developed to serve the recreational needs of the county. Ashtabula County Metroparks secured a lease from the state of Ohio for construction of the trail. The ACT2000 task force on parks & recreation became interested in the project and caused a "jump start" of funding. In early 1999 a TEA-21 grant was awarded. When put with matching funds, it created nearly $1,250,000 for construction of the trail. The formal opening of the trail was on July 15th 2002.

There are benches all along the trail for resting. Parking areas are located in various locations also. Trail is paved and a large part is shaded. There is much history along the trail, old silo, Remnants of steam engine cooling house, tressels, bridges and a couple tunnels.

To earn the WRGT GeoTrail Trackable Geo Coin
I have placed code words along the trail. Most are written on cache logs and/or inside cache lids. In order to claim your coin you must turn in the completed passport. You must have 2 code words per mile of trail 52 code words total. Each code word has the corisponding mile that it is in. Example: 20-Event this means it is a code word for mile 20. You must complete all 26 miles to recieve your coin. Most miles have at least 3 code words in them as a safety net. The Ashtabula County Convention & Visitors Bureau has funded the coins and will be a pick up point along with Shannons Mini Mart.
Make sure you bring your cameras and enjoy the sites and nature.
Some animals I have seen are, Deer, Beaver, Otter, Eagle, Owl, Hawk, Falcon, Geese, Crane, squirrel, Chipmunk, Snakes, frogs, turtle and turkey.
Please come out and celebrate the opening of this great Geotrail with me. Make all the hard work even more memorable.
