"CB #1" (CEDAR BAYOU) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

rambetta: This series is being archived after recent industrial construction, extreme flood conditions and erosion have altered the shoreline and resulted in loss of many of the original cache locations.
A new series should be 'up and ready' soon.

Geocache Description:

“CB #1” - CEDAR BAYOU It is April, the sun is out, the temperature pleasant and the ‘mossies’ population still at bay. It’s a fantastic time to be outside. Even better is to be on the water. Having paddled the CLAPS with Good Ol’ Stick-ma-Mud (grand-daughter Emma’s term of endearment for her grandpa), I came to the conclusion that we needed a more northern version of a water series. Cedar Bayou runs thru beautiful Baytown Texas. Flowing from Liberty County to Galveston Bay, it forms the boundary between Harris County and Chambers and Liberty Counties. It is a wonderful waterway just begging to be discovered and explored. Cedar Bayou is home to herons, egrets, ducks, turtles and the occasional gator, so do be careful. Fishing for reds, specs and catfish is generally good. Nice sized shrimp can be caught in a cast net so your outing on our bayou could be two-fold. (Mattmur actually DID catch a nice catfish, a BUNCH of shad and a SHRIMP while we placed the series.) Cedar Bayou is open to most any form of water transportation, so again, do be careful. On any given day, one might find kayak, canoe, paddle boat, row boat, flat-bottom boat, fishing boat, speed boat, ski-boat, cigar boat, jet-ski, shrimp boat, barge or tug traversing the waters of the eastern boundary of Harris County. Wakes from the larger vessels can definitely increase the excitement of the terrain. Occasionally a bit choppy, [pending weather conditions and barge traffic] the last several excursions we made on the bayou were as ‘smooth as glass’; perfect for our outings with the Geo-Pups Dawg and Rico. Weather conditions are always subject to change at the spur of the moment. This IS Texas. This is 1 of a series of 13 traditional caches, plus 1 bonus “Puzzle” cache. It was placed with the assistance of Good Ol’ Stick-ma-Mud, the Geo-Pups, Mattmur, Michele and the darling EMMA in a Flat-Bottom Boat. The series should be accessible by almost any form of water-craft (or other means of you’re choosing). The series runs from just north of Roseland Park [near Parking Waypoint 1] to just north of the HWY 146 Bridge, for a distance of approximately 3 miles. They were placed at LOW TIDE so they should, again, be easily accessible. Access to the water is rather limited for launching and take-out of watercraft. I have listed 2 Waypoints for parking/launching. We have traveled the bayou in search of other locations without success. Should you know of another (legal) location to launch, please let me know. ******************************************************* Parking Way Point #1 is located at Roseland Park in Beautiful Baytown, Texas. Roseland Park offers a nice boat ramp, parking (for cars AND trailers, picnic area, facilities, swings, slides and a spray park for the kiddos. There are several caches in Roseland Park, if you haven’t been here before. Roseland Park Boat Ramp - WP#1: N 29.43.387 W 94.56.574 Parking Waypoint #2 is located at J.C. Hollaway Park, off Raccoon Drive in Beautiful Baytown, Texas. J.C. Hollaway Park offers parking, picnic area, swings and slides as well as tennis and basketball courts. It also has a nice little trail leading to Jenkins Park, which has a dog-park, baseball fields, bike/skateboard park and a multitude of caches if you haven’t been here before. J.C. Hollaway Park – WP#2: N 29.46.338 W 94.55.73 There is NO BOAT RAMP at J.C. Hollaway Park. The ONLY water access is via a grassy hill that kayaks/canoes COULD be carried from the parking lot to the water. J.C. Hollaway Park is on Cary Bayou, a tributary of Cedar Bayou. The majority of Cary Bayou will accommodate watercraft with a ‘5 foot draft’. The water level at J.C. Hollaway Park (west of the bridge over Raccoon Drive) does not allow for deep hulled watercraft, but our Flat-Bottom (with motor) makes it, even at low tide, without problem. (Utilizing J.C. Hollaway Park may allow a one-way paddle for those with non-motorized watercraft.) ******************************************************* The DO’S of Cedar Bayou  Be careful.  Wear a life vest.  Wear sunscreen.  Bring plenty of water.  Yield to large vessels.  Observe all rules of water safety.  Respect the private property of residents along the waterway.  Enjoy your visit.  Get the cache placed by a local Baytown legend while you are out there. Availability of launch locations, watercraft, water traffic, current and openness of Cedar Bayou may make this series a bit more challenging. It is a lovely ride, though, and I do hope that it will bring you to explore and enjoy the waters of Baytown. NOTE:  These caches were placed at LOW TIDE and a few of the locations were quite shallow, but ALL were accessible in our flat-bottom.  As with all caching, please remember to keep the waterways clear of trash and please do not disturb the crab traps or private property you will pass on your venture.
