Been meaning to visit this place for ages and when the chance came up, I thought this would be the ideal location for a funky cache container I've put together. You'll see why the cache gets its name when you get here!
As for getting here, it's not the most straightforward site to get to - if you find a better way than we did (probably not all that difficult!) let me know. Park up around N55 54.800 W002 38.047 and head through the gate ans across the field to another gate at N55 54.689 W002 38.276. Walk along the field edge until a fence crosses your path where there is a wooden section you can use to get over - barbed wire everywhere else, but this is a place you can cross without too much bother. Go down to the gate - it was rather muddy when we visited - and negotiate that before working your way along that field edge. One more gate to cross near that mini quarry before heading up another field edge to get to the fabled Star Wood!
Have a look at this place from a satellite view, it really is 'X' marks the spot!
One more word of caution, we found evidence of shooting beats and plenty of spent shotgun cartridges all around Star Wood so be vigilant for any shooting underway. Given the number of grouse we saw today, I'd avoid visiting in August.
