Geocache Description:

An easy cache in memory of a great Australian!

The cache is located near Our Lady of the River School and St Catherine's Nursing Home - both have a historical connection to Mary MacKillop.

MARY MACKILLOP
Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842. When she was in Penola she met Julian Tenison Woods and together they opened the first St Joseph's School in 1866.
Mary MacKillop founded the Sisters of St Joseph to continue this work. Over the many following years, the number of Sisters grew as did their schools. Schools were opened as the needs arose: in country towns, mining towns, cities. The Sisters also became involved in other areas of need including setting up a refuge for women in need and orphanages for children, visiting prisons and working with the sick.

SCHOOL..
When the plans of St Mary’s Church were drawn up in the 1920s, a dual role was envisaged: a church for Sundays and other special occasions and a school that would be used on weekdays. It was almost ten years to the day, from the laying of the foundation stone of St Mary's Church, to the school becoming a reality. Bishop Gilroy officiated at the blessing and opening on the 26th January 1936, at which time the first Sisters of St Joseph were welcomed to Berri.

NURSING HOME
Since 1987 the Sisters of St Joseph have continued the work begun at St Catherine's by the Daughters of Charity in 1961. The Sisters of St. Joseph also provide Residential Aged Care at Flora MacDonald Lodge, Cowandilla and Tappeiner Court, Kensington and have Homes in N.S.W., Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand.

MARY MACKILLOP cont.
Mary MacKilop's famous saying was "Never see a need without doing something about it"
Well..... there was a need, a geochache in her honour, and something has been done about it!
This is one of many caches placed in significant locations of her story.

Mary died on August 8th, 1909.

She was declared Australia’s first Saint in 2012.
