Geocache Description:

A quick P&G, but we hope you will pause long enough to take in the view and its significance.

Not all the beauty in this area is to be found at higher elevations.

When George Featherstonhaugh recounted his trip through this area in his 1837 book, A Canoe Trip up the Minnary Sotor, he described this prosperous river country as

“a valley enlarging to a mile of rich bottom land surrounded by lofty and picturesque hills covered with fine woods. This was the Paradise of the Cherokees, their wigwams built on graceful knolls rising above the level of the river bottoms, each of them having its patch of Indian corn with beans climbing to the top of each plant, and squashes and pumpkins growing on the ground.”

Though the Cherokees were living in log cabins by Featherstonhaugh’s day, the author was correct in his assessment of the area’s fertility. Approximately 10 miles long, the valley offers the most level land in the entire county; the bottoms contain practically three-fourths of the cleared land in Cherokee County and are the heart of its agriculture.

Ignoring modern amenities, a ride along Fairview Road today affords a sense of the valley as it was in the 1800’s.
