This cache is placed near the site of the Texas Historical Marker, Camp Belknap. The orignal camp set a top of the first high ground from the Gulf Coast, measuring just 2 miles and a half mile at it widest. There is good parking.
Camp Belknap was established in the summer of 1846 and housed 7 to 8,000 of General Zachary Taylor's new volunteers from as many as 8 states. No one died from a gunshot while at summer camp. But they still had as many as two funerals a day. They died a premature death from exposure to the elements, unsanitary living conditions, overcrowding, biting insects, thorny plants and disease. The lucky ones moved out up river nearer Matamoros in August and September. The camp put the closed sign out in December.
