Maine Hummingbird
Ruby-throats spend the spring and summer breeding season in most of the eastern half of the United States and in Canada from the Maritime Provinces to Alberta. In the Fall they migrate south and winter from southern Texas and Mexico south to Costa Rica.
In most years, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds arrive back in Maine around the first week of May, following the progression of the seasons and the flowering of plants and trees. Males usually show up first to stake out their feeding territories which they will defend aggressively. Males may mate with numerous females that enter their territory during the breeding season. Once mating has occurred, females do all the tasks of nest building and raising their brood without any involvement from the males.
Hummingbirds have one of the highest metabolic rates of any warm-blooded animals and must feed almost constantly throughout the daylight hours to "fuel the fires". Their "natural" diet consists of nector from flowers and small insects and spiders usually gathered at the flowers they feed on. Hummingbirds readily feed at nector feeders placed in backyards.
