Thomas River is the gateway to the Cape Arid National Park, just over one hour east of Esperance on mostly bitumen road. The estuary is home to waterbirds and waders, and the bay is a breeding area for hooded plovers. Southern Right Whales visit Tagon Bay during winter months.
The cache is a small plastic container. Please be careful when walking on the trial when it has been raining, as the rocks are slippery when wet. Avoid stepping on the black parts of the rock.
The Cape Arid National Park has ruins of homesteads and dams built by pioneer graziers in the early 1870s, but access is by 4WD track. There are several delightful bays within walking distance of Thomas River estuary on well marked tracks, including Dolphin Cove, Little Tagon Bay and Tagon Bay. Good meals and coffee also help break up the trip at the Condingup Tavern, about half-way between Esperance and Thomas River.
