This is a section of Shan Pui River.
Wastewater and rubbish follow the rising tide to enter Shan Pui River from Deep Bay and reach Yuen Long New Town, resulting in foul smells. To solve the problems, the authority built an inflatable dam right here, to intercept the Deep Bay backflow. When there are rainstorms, the dam is deflated to allow floodwater to flow out to the estuary.
The river is management by Drainage Services Department. Reducing the impacts of foul smells is more important than the ecosystem of the water course.
