Geocache Description:

This Earth Cache is about the natural springs found in Weldon Springs State Recreation Area. This location offers many outdoor activities for everyone.

Weldon Springs is a unique spring considering it is found in the prairies of central Illinois. The source of the water coming from the springs can be traced back to the ancient Teays River. This was the biggest river of interior America.

In the Pleistocene Age or "Ice Age", a series of glaciers were spawned. The Kansan glacier completely covered the Teays River. The Illinoisan and Wisconsin glaciers then deposited up to 200 feet of glacial till over the area, completely destroying the Teays Valley.

The Teays stopped flowing on the surface, but groundwater still flows through till deposits of sand and gravel located above impermeable bedrock. The groundwater then oozes out through cracks of an overlying clay layer, emerging as springs.

At the given waypoint, you will find more information about Weldon Springs. To log a find on this EC, you must visit the site and obtain the information to answer these questions:

1 - About how long ago was the glacial till deposited here?

2 - What are the different layers of glacial till present at the site?

3 - How many springs are present emitting water?

4 - The spring water is not suitable for drinking. Based on the information at the site, why is this?

5 - For fun, post a picture of you or your GPSr in front of Old Faithful. (optional)

Once you have the answers to the questions, submit them in an EMAIL to me through geocaching.com. Only then may you log this EC found. Please DO NOT post the answers in your found log. If I find that you have not sent me the correct answers (using your best judgment) or that you have posted answers in your log, I will reluctantly have to delete your find.

With that being said, enjoy this extraordinary piece of geology located here in central Illinois.
