Geocache Description:

DiSCO nano cache near to a building that was once an integral part of traffic management on the A1 before Chester-le-Street was bypassed.
You do NOT need to enter the fenced area to access the cache.
Leaders of units using the building for meetings each evening (Mon -Thurs) have been made aware of its existence.

This building used to be a vehicle weighbridge when what is now the A167 was the A1. Of course the original A1 Great North Road is now Front Street through the centre of town. This road was the first town bypass, since superseded by the dual carraigway further east again. You can still see where the scale base was in the roadway at the front of the building.

Since the late 1980s the building has been the home of Girl Guides in Chester-le-Street.
The first Guide unit in town was registered in October 1911 as the 4th Durham Company. It is still in existence as 1st Chester-le-Street (St Mary's and St Cuthbert's) Guides along with 5 other Guide units, 8 Brownie Packs, 8 Rainbow Guide units and a Senior Section Group and a Trefoil Guild group. Our membership ranges in age from 5 to 85 and we total over 500.

The cache title is from the words of the Guide Marching song originally written many decades ago and updated as time goes by.

Guide Marching Song

Who are we,
Swingin’ along the road,
With a pack on our back,
A song in our heart,
To ease the load?

It’s been one hundred years or more,
Since they crowded through the door,
And they’re coming along,
As gay and strong,
As ever they came before.

CHORUS
We are Guides.
All Guides,
And in unexpected places,
You’ll meet our friendly faces,
And a ready hand beside.

And there’s not much danger,
Of finding you’re a stranger,
Rainbow, Brownie, guide or Ranger,
We are Guides.
All Guides.

Who are we,
Living beneath the skies,
While the shimmering sun,
The pattering rain,
The clouds pass by?

We will dine beneath the bows,
And our leader always vows,
That we’re never afraid of wasps,
And hardly ever afraid of cows.
